Like most of the world I spent the better part of my day paying close attention to the news coming out of Egypt. It is, indeed, exciting news. I have hope that the people of Egypt will gain some of the democratic reforms that they they are fighting to obtain.
I have to admit that I have my doubts. The Middle East is not noted as being a region with a strong democratic sentiment. Dictators and fascists predominate in the politics of the area. The social media revolution last year in Iran failed miserably in spite of world wide coverage. The recent events in Tunisia did overthrow a dictator but the jury is still out on whether or not the revolution was a democratic one.
The Middle East is a powder keg. One wrong move and the Mullahs could rise and the people will have replace a money-crazed dictator with a religious one. I don’t envy the choices that the politicos and the people are facingin these trying days.
